A Force for Transformative Good…
Project 351 is a youth-led service movement, fueled by the values and vision of a rising generation of change makers. A nonprofit organization and the only model of its kind, Project 351 annually unites an eighth grade unsung hero from each of Massachusetts' 351 cities and towns in a shared mission of service. We believe that every young person is remarkable and that within them lies the tools, vision, and desire to build a more just, inclusive, and united global community.
Over a year's term, these diverse young leaders transform and uplift communities through civic leadership and an emphasis on kindness, compassion, humility, and gratitude. And, scale transformative impact for a portfolio of nonprofit organizations that address hunger, poverty, homelessness, and care for our veterans and seniors. Since 2011, 4,123 Ambassadors have made a positive difference in the lives of 1,012,344 neighbors. As they serve, Ambassadors foster unity, mobilize schools and communities, and develop the courage, compassion, and capabilities for a lifetime of leadership.
In 2019, Project 351 honored Courtney's Dad as Service Hero. Each year, Ambassadors are mobilized on forty-five geographically diverse Service Hero teams, which are led by an Alumni mentor for a 12-month leadership journey. Teams draw inspiration from their Hero and dedicate their year of service in their honor. Service Heroes include Nelson Mandela, Malala, Anne Frank, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, and Congressman John Lewis; as well as everyday heroes like Chuck whose eternal optimism, outsized heart, and passion for an engaged democracy inspires our awe.
Chuck Champion
2019 Service Hero
Chuck Campion advised Presidents and CEOs; traveled the country and globe to build democracy; met heroes from Springsteen to the Pope; and mentored, coached, and encouraged thousands of young people to embrace public service as a lifelong calling. His celebrated career as political strategist began at age nine, campaigning for his grandfather's West Roxbury legislative seat. Decades later, when politics had grown less neighborly, Chuck remained the same earnest, ethical, endlessly creative, grassroots, and handshake-as-my-bond brand of political genius. Those traits, coupled with courage and dignity, marked his response to serious health challenges. A new campaign, Chuck as impassioned advocate for the Massachusetts General Hospital Transplant Center. An effort carried on by his loving family. From Chuck Campion, we gain lessons of decency and grace. Of the importance of time invested in relationships and laughter. Of the transformative power of love for family, friends, and country. Of the cherished gift of a perfect day, at the helm of his boat with his three favorite shipmates. The sun always rising.
