April 14th: Maggie McLeod

We are grateful always, for sunshine, and for the radiant spirits of our Ambassadors, whose goodness shines like sunbeams.

Today's #351GratitudeMoment comes from Sudbury, the home of Ambassador Maggie McLeod. Maggie's fierce commitment to social justice is wrapped in gentle kindness.

Her Launch Day essays outline her hopes for our world, "My dream for a better world is a place where people are treated fairly regardless of their race, ethnicity, origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, or disability. I dream for a world where the fight against climate change is a high priority. I dream for a world where hate crimes no longer exist. I dream for a world where people who have less, have the opportunity to thrive. I dream for a world where people unite to solve problems and the where the truth is always prevails." Maggie serves on the Amanda Gorman Service Hero team, which honors the country's first youth poet laureate. Maggie honored Amanda through her Spring Service and wrote, "I'm really inspired by how she uses the power of her voice to create positive change and 'good trouble' in the world." Based on her reflections on the wonderful team at the Ephraim Curtis Middle School, we think Maggie is doing just that! "I am thankful for the teachers and staff of my school. They go above and beyond to make sure my classmates and I are still able to learn, even though we are at home.

My teachers have given us virtual assignments and topics to learn about, and have given us ways to help us get through these tough times, like online check-ins and links to helpful resources. They also hold virtual meetings with my classmates and I, so that we can stay in touch.

I am deeply appreciative for these caring actions. Even through all of the challenges that are being thrown at everyone right now, my teachers continue to show how much they care about our school community.

My teachers make me feel hopeful that, as a school community, we can make it through these uncertain times together."

As we kick-off Service Leadership Academy, our foremost mission is to ensure we are a source of compassion, care, and positive impact during these uncertain times. We are inspired, always, by the voices of our young leaders and their aspirations to be ambassadors of hopeful progress.

Today's #351GratitudeMoment is from Ambassador Anika Teckchandani of Braintree. Reflections of gratitude and a vision fo

"I am extremely grateful for my mom, dad and sister. Throughout these tough times, I find my self lost and stressed about COVID-19. Luckily, my parents are always there for me! Whenever I'm stressed, they always comfort me by saying everything will be just fine. They help me get my mind clear and their words always make me feel happier.

My little sister, on the other hand, is just wonderful. She's great company and always makes me laugh. If it weren't for my family, these times would feel much tougher. During hard challenges, we always need those people who make us feel better and for me...that's my family!"

Anika's family serves as the foundation of her resolve to be a catalyst for unity and the celebration diversity. In her Launch Day essays, she reflected, "America is a diverse country where people from all over the world have come with their families for a better life. Unfortunately, they can be judged by their faces and their race. And, assumptions are made related to different cultures that lead to miscommunication or misunderstanding. My wish is for all people to have the courage and support to communicate their true selves.

I want to be the change in my community so that other people can follow and together we can make the world a better place."

"Ad meliora" is a Latin phrase that means "toward better things" -- an aspiration we all take to heart these days.

At Norwood High School, Patrick Brady's Latin studies move him toward better things -- as student, young leader, and citizen of the world.

Patrick, a freshman member of our Regional Service Team, reflects on his efforts toward better things: "I want to show people that service is not just good for others, but it also feeds your soul. I’ve always felt better about my role in the world after service and with Project 351, I get to inspire others to change our community and feel that way, too." One of his role models in the art of inspiring others is his Latin teacher, Mrs. Holmes. Patrick dedicates a virtual high five (in the attached image) and this #351GratitudeMoment to his very special educator role model: "On my first day of High School, one of the classes I was most nervous about was Latin. The subject is quite frankly intimidating, and it can be taught in a multitude of different ways, which may not necessarily be beneficial to a student.
However, my anxieties were quickly eased when I met Mrs. Holmes, who is one of the kindest adults I know.

From noticing and complimenting you on a new haircut, to taking the time to cheer you up when you're sad, Mrs. Holmes is dedicated to ensuring that her classroom is an environment that fosters positive energy as much as she is focused on teaching Latin.

Through the Coronavirus pandemic, she has brought our class together multiple times through Zoom. Of course, she reviews Latin, but she also checks up on us and how each of our families are doing.

Mrs. Holmes also runs the Latin Club which provides an enjoyable place to not only explore Roman culture, but to bring people together in fun, albeit unique ways (such as sacrificing a piñata goat!). I dedicate this #351GratitudeMoment to Mrs. Holmes. And, thank her for providing a safe and inspiring environment for her students each and every day.

You're the best, Mrs. Holmes!" At Project 351, we just <3 educators!

President Woodrow Wilson said, “Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together.” Of late, that "cement" feels more essential and inspires even deeper appreciation.

The beauty of today's #351GratitudeMoment by Lucas Lee, Regional Service Team, Carlisle, fills our hearts and reminds us of the treasures in our life.

Thank you, Lucas, for all the ways you serve and lead with courage and compassion. And, for today's #351GratitudeMoment: "It is often said that in times of crisis, you will find out who your friends really are. That saying is undeniably true for me, and in these times I’ve witnessed people drawn closer together, not torn apart. I am grateful to my friends and family, as I'm truly lucky to be surrounded by such a great group of people who help keep me entertained and smiling no matter what’s going on. I know they would have my back if I ever needed them. I want hem to know -- I appreciate all of you, and I have your backs, too!

I would like to give special appreciation to my mom, whose own mother is a current cancer patient just outside of New York City. Every day, both of them show true strength and courage, a resolve that I hope I can have when I am older. Stay strong." #351GratitudeMoment

April 7th: Alumni Voice: Shannon Moore

Our Ambassadors and Alumni's greatest role models and inspirations are members of their family. Today's #351GratitudeMoment features the reflections of Shannon Moore of Billerica, ALC Leader, Anne Frank Service Hero team.
The Moore tradition of service has shaped Shannon's life. She reflects, "Service and leadership have always been a part of my life. I always try to be as kind as possible. When I was little, I would help my mom sort baby items for church drives. Through Girl Scouts, we’d serve every year. I always wanted to serve more and explore my higher capacity to lead, but I never had the opportunity. Project 351 changed that...and my life!"
As one of our frontline service leaders and mentors, Shannon is building skills, confidence, and compassion for a life of service. In her case, a lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. Alongside the educators that she considers heroes is her ultimate role model and source of greatest pride -- her sister, Kimberly.
Today's #351GratitudeMoment is sent with love from Shannon to Kimberly, "I’m extremely thankful for my sister, Kimberly. She’s a nurse at Beth Israel and works long and difficult hours during this chaotic time. Yet, she continues to persevere and do incredible work in her field. And, always remains her very kind self. Not only that, she always finds the time to check in with me...to make sure that I’m okay.
All my life, I’ve looked up to Kimberly, and this past month has only proven even further that she -- and every nurse -- is truly incredible."
To Kimberly and all of the heroes at Beth Israel and in our medical community...we extend our deepest appreciation and awe for your heroic, life saving service. And, send 351 love and this #351GratitudeMoment to you.

Today and for the next few weeks, we hand our #351GratitudeMoment over to our Ambassadors and Alumni -- the most inspiring voices we know.

As we reflected last week, we've witnessed a new level of their devotion, deeper empathy, greater concern, and stronger resolve over the last month. And, special dedication to acts of gratitude and service to those whom they lift up as unsung heroes. Role models in their communities who lead and care -- and hope and heal -- so selflessly during this time of challenge.

Today, we're so grateful to Carter Cantafio, Regional Service Team, Swansea, for today's #351GratitudeMoment: "During this time of distress and unease, my high school Principal, Brian McCann, has done an outstanding job providing guidance while we are out of school. Without Mr. McCann's guidance, distance learning would be much more of a struggle. Every morning, he posts a video of himself reading daily announcements on YouTube and Twitter, ensuring every member of the Swansea Schools community is up-to-date in this fluid situation.

However, Mr. McCann shines through even when the schedule is normal in school. Every Thursday morning, he hosts "Positive Sign Thursday" and greets all of the students as we arrive at school with a sign saying something positive. So even before the day starts, he is lifting our spirits! As a freshman, his kindness has made my transition to a new school environment far more comfortable.

And, whenever a special event such as a holiday or day of remembrance takes place, you can count on Mr. McCann's sign to reflect it. This sign that he made on Halloween said "You are boo-tiful." I am beyond grateful to have a principal who goes above and beyond to make his student's high school experience the best it can possible be.

Thank you, Mr. McCann!!" Project 351 joins Carter in appreciating the wonderful, dedicated, and inspiring Mr. McCann. Today's #351GratitudeMoment celebrates you!

We admire.
We honor.
We respect.

April 2nd: Ambassadors and Alumni

This #351GratitudeMoment takes a respectful pause from appreciating our community's role model and heroes, to reflect inward.

Today, we offer appreciation for the inspiration for our mission, the stewards of our values, and leaders of positive change -- our Ambassadors and Alumni. Each of the 3,753 selected as their community's unsung hero/quiet leader since 2011, have embraced the call to serve and invested countless hours, big dreams, bold ideas, and all heart to "unite, act, lead" as one team, one community in service.

And, what a difference you have made -- through acts of service impacting more than 770,000 lives since 2011. Leadership that transforms and will endure, as you strengthen the values of kindness, compassion, gratitude, and inclusion in your schools and community. And, as you build a youth-led movement of positive change.

In the last month, we have witnessed a new level of devotion, deeper empathy, greater concern, and stronger resolve. We have watched as you elevate and appreciate the frontline heroes who lead and care -- and hope and heal -- so selflessly during this time of challenge. And, take pride as you innovate new ways to collaborate and serve...to be a source of comfort, care, and impact where your community needs it most.

Thank you for your example. You teach us about the power of kindness, the necessity of goodness, and the unlimited potential of young people united by a cause greater than self. Please continue to lead, we need your courage and compassion now more than ever.

For this #351GratitudeMoment and every hour of every day, we give thanks for you!

April 1st: Sanitation Workers

Today's #351GratitudeMoment is a tribute to a workforce that most often works before dawn in the quiet of city streets and on long expanses of country roads -- sanitation professionals. As we sleep, they bring shine to the neighborhoods and homes we love.

We're inspired by the spirit of Aaron Meier, a sanitation worker for the city of San Francisco. In a series of Tweets, he expresses the increased pride he feels, as he provides basic services to help fight the spread of COVID-19.

"Sometimes it’s hard to keep my legs movin’ and I just wanna stop," Meier told "Good Morning America." "But I have a route to do…It started feeling more important to me, like I needed to help the people of my city."

We dedicate this #351GratitudeMoment to Aaron and to these public servants who serve our communities with excellence and pride. And, encourage their recognition through acts of kindness like that of Boston Councilor Matt O'Malley, who posted, "Please join me in leaving thank you notes for our incredibly dedicated sanitation workers (remember to leave one for trash & one for recycling). These men & women are serving on the front lines & deserve our deep appreciation."

We close with the words of Aaron, "Be good to each other, and we'll get through this. 💕"

March 31st: Media

This afternoon's #351GratitudeMoment lifts up the field of journalism. And, the critical role that the media plays during a time of crisis. In an era when media operates with fewer resources and leaner staffs, our local, regional, and national journalists are pursuing facts, information, and guidance in extreme conditions with greatest excellence. And, often at risk for their own health, as increasing numbers of the media are affected and afflicted by the coronavirus.

Despite challenge, they remain resolute in their passion for the truth. As Kristin Roberts, vice president of news for McClatchy news service tweeted, “Journalism’s most critical role in a crisis is to provide information people need to make decisions for the safety of family and community. That is our mission.”

To support that mission of care through informing our greater knowledge, media outlets have removed paywalls, created websites, expanded programming, and innovated social media. And, they've also served an essential role in providing hope and lifting spirits. Each day, they showcase the heroes, frontline workers, and acts of grace that remind us of our common humanity and that we're all in this together.

We are grateful for every one of our local journalists and outlets -- from radio shows to weekly newspapers to major news outlets. But, we want to share a special word of thanks for our media partner WBZ-TV and 2020 Service Hero Lisa Hughes. We always feel so fortunate for their partnership, which celebrates the unlimited potential of all young people to be positive agents of change. But, we've been especially proud of and grateful for their leadership throughout these uncertain times.

And, we offer this WBZ-TV video invitation to share gratitude as an opportunity to build hope and a reserve of strength and unity for the days ahead.

To WBZ-TV, Lisa, and every journalist and media outlet, we offer this heartfelt #351GratitudeMoment.
